Safety... When a handgun is a bit much

Handguns have their place in self defense. Though there may be times when a handgun is a bit much when it comes to protecting ones self. There are other ways to defend against being a victim.

Each of us has our own "personal space". If that personal space is breached, there is a "fight or flight" sequence that is initiated. How we defend ourselves depends on personal preferences, skills and abilities.

Tasers can be used quite effectively to disorient an attacker. There are problematic issues that should be thought of. For a taser to be effective, a number of things have to be taken into consideration. First, the taser has to be fully charged. Second, the taser has to be in contact with the skin. Going through clothes may make it less effective, depending on the power of the taser.

Throwing stars and throwing knives may be an option. Yet, there may be local or state laws that need to be checked into before purchasing such items. The individual may need to be licensed, in some jurisdictions to carry them. There is also a really huge learning curve on how to effectively use and throw a throwing star or knife and actually hit your target. Unless you practice a great deal, these may be very dangerous for you to use. Think about the time and energy you want to commit to training.

There are other sorts of knives that can also be carried. Folding knives can provide an effective defense. There are knives that are called "auto" knives, in that you press a button and the blade springs into place. Check with your jurisdiction to make sure that style of knife is legal for you to carry. It would be of no use to you if you were the one in jail, now, would it?

Yo-yo's have been seen as a toy, yet, it has it's history as a self defense weapon. The use of a yo-yo for self defense is not a new concept. Yo-yo's have been around since 5000B.C. Those, however where more of a decorative type than used as primary self defense.

Another option is Martial Arts. Karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu, Aikido can all provide a very effective defense against an oncoming thug. There are other martial arts, but I didn't want to overwhelm you with the various styles of Martial arts. CQD or Close Quarter Defense takes a great deal of training and commitment.
